It's COOL to be an administrative professional because you travel to great places.  Often, assistants travel to attend their leader's special team meeting; help with site visits in preparations for meetings; be involved in a major company event where you need to travel; attend corporate board meetings and more.  During my 20 year career, I traveled to some places that were fun, interesting, exotic, and breathtaking.

In my early days, I worked at an association and planned the annual meetings and was able to do the site visits before the actual event.  The association always selected high-end hotels.  It was fun to be able to travel and not have to pay for it!  Usually, I was given the best accommodations in the hotel because I was considered an event planner and they wanted to show off their best rooms.  I also use to do food tastings to select special meals for top executives.  Again, all the expense of my employer.

In one of my roles, my executive belonged to a very nice country club where we often held meetings with his direct reports.  I was able to attend and participate in those meetings. When I look back, I was able to experience many beautiful places because of the executives I worked with or because of the organization in which I worked. This broadened my horizon.  Have you had similar experiences?  Have you been able to go to any really COOL places because of who you work with?

Joan, that sounds like so much fun! I have only had the oppurtunity to travel once with the company I worked with (about 20 years ago!). I would enjoy being back in that type of position, but for now I work close to home and have the flexibility to take time off when my kids have events.

I have always enjoyed the conferences, meetings and trainings that I have been able to participate in over the years. It's the big thing that I miss now that access to those experiences has been lost in the economic situation... pretty much the first budget line that got cut was travel money for staff.

I look forward to the day when I can again travel and learn and enjoy those opportunities to expand my horizons over the horizon!

Unfortunately at my current job I do not get the opportunity to travel. My previous employment was at a country club where the clubhouse sat up on a hill right off of a lake. What a beautiful view we had everyday just steps from my office. In the summer we were able to eat lunch out on the patio in the members' grill which overlooked the golf course. Those were great days.

This is one of the perks of the administrative profession which I LOVE! Before becoming an executive assistant, my dream was to be a flight attendant and travel the world, of course, that was before my son came and then things changed. But being an administrative professional has given me the opportunity to travel to many places within the United States.

As Joan states in her blog, having this great opportunity also opens up others such as networking, learning new cultures or customs from a specific area, etc. I recently came from a trip to Nashville, TN. This was a new location for me and I enjoyed learning about the history of country music and also the history of our 7th President, Andrew Jackson.

What I usually do when I travel to a new location is either take a few vacation days before or after the conference. This way you can combine work with fun.

I am thankful for having the priviledge to travel and have these experiences.

I planned two events and one was held at Bryan Head in Utah, the other was at Mt. Charleston. In Bryan Head we were staying at condos and I took hubby with me. At the Mt. Charleston lodge, they gave me the bridal suite!! It was a nice corner room, but the lodge ain't that great. The best part about that meeting was at night. I stood on my balcony and just enjoyed the clear night and the stars. Without the lights of the city, the stars were awesome.

The sales rep at the Bryan Head lodge did give me a gift of a free weekend with meals and a spa basket. Hubby and I went back and spend Thanksgiving at the lodge. It snowed!!

Annual board meetings are now being held in town because of the economy. They used to go to Newport Beach - darn it!!! Oh well, I still love my job, my new boss and my Trustees.

I have traveled a handful of times for my previous employer, and the most memorable was when I was asked to attend our International Operations Quarterly Meeting in Geneva, Switzerland. My first international trip. An amazing experience.

Not only did I attend the meetings, but I was included in many dinners, and was also given one day off to enjoy the sights with my executive vice president's mother, father and oldest son, as well as some of the wives of the local executives. My favorite site was visiting Mont Blanc, as I was able to take the most beautiful pictures.

I have been forever grateful for that amazing experience that being an executive assistant provided.

I have had the COOL Privilege of doing this for 10 + years. My position changed almost 3 years ago and I no longer get to do this anymore. But when I did it was COOL in so many ways. I saw places I never thought I would see. Meet people I otherwise would never have meet.

A big perk that came out of all these meeting was building a strong relationship with outside vendors and customers!

Unfortunately, I have not had the opportunity to travel with this company as much. The previous company I was with I traveled a couple of times to their headquarters in Michigan. It was cool to be with other people from around the country that were in a similiar position. That was fun.

I've only been able to travel once, but it was fantastic! I was alone for the first time on a plane and stayed at a fabulous hotel. I was fortunate to have a relative in the area, so when I wasn't in training, she showed me the sights of Tucson. It was a great opportunity that I won't ever forget....and you're right....it was at no cost to me!

It is definitely COOL to be an admin when the opportunity to travel arises. I once planned a corporate retreat for our managment staff in Chicago at the Ritz-Carlton. It was definitely a treat to find out I would be included in the trip. It was a very fun, pampering weekend!
