5 Ways to Thank the Assistants Who Help You Succeed

Did you know it’s Administrative Professionals Week starting April 20? This happens to be one of my favorite weeks all year – and not just because I was once an assistant myself before I founded my company back in 1990.

I love celebrating this week because it gives me a chance to thank my own assistant for everything she does to help me be even more successful. If it weren’t for administrative professionals, business would cease. Managers and executives could not be effective. In fact, if not for assistants, the entire economy would collapse. If you don’t agree, just think of what happens when your assistant is out, even for a day! Multiply that by more than 4 million assistants in the United States alone and… well, you get my point!
 
Here are five great ways to thank those outstanding, indispensable administrative professionals who help us succeed each and every day:
 
  1. Support their professional development. For example, if there’s a seminar or training session they can attend April 25 either on- or off-site, let them go! Sure, you’ll miss them for a few hours. But allowing them to observe the day through career development sends the message that you do appreciate their efforts. 
  1. Give a meaningful gift. Note my intentional use of the word “meaningful.” Everyone gives flowers, coffee mugs, balloons or similar items. This year, why not invest in gifts that help advance assistants’ careers? There’s no shortage of books, CDs, DVDs and other career-enhancing tools out there, in a wide range of prices. Take your pick – and reinforce the respect you have for their career aspirations.
  1. Treat them to lunch. It doesn’t necessarily have to be on Administrative Professionals Day. Maybe you wait until a few weeks from now – whenever it’s convenient for both of you! Be sure to use the time to get to know your assistant even better. Avoid talking about work. Make your assistant feel as special as he or she is.
  1. Give them special flex time. This depends, of course, on your employer’s policies and project deadlines. Still, if you can let your assistant leave a little early one day this week, it’s a nice way to say, “Thank you for the times you’ve stayed late to help me.”
  1. Offer a sincere thank you. Sometimes, the most invaluable gifts we receive are heartfelt compliments. Whether you publicly praise assistants at a department meeting or personally look them in the eye and express your gratitude, the gesture is sure to be appreciated.
If you are an assistant, then congratulations on your continuing success in this worthwhile, incredibly important career. This week, our hats are off to you!

    • I know we are all busy and niceties have a tendency to be forgotten but when someone takes just a moment and says thank you that means more to me than anything.

    • Supporting professional development and giving a meaninful gift are high on my list! And I have tried to steer the employer in that direction . . . unfortunately too many here want the food, flowers and department store gift certificates. I will keep trying though! :)

    • As the person mentioned before, the admins want the food, flowers and gift certificates. I've tried to talk with my boss about letting us go to seminars, or have an on-site seminar but to no avail. Last year I gave the admin Become an Inner Circle Admin as gifts, they seem to have enjoyed receiving it. I personally look forward to getting a meaningful gift someday. In the mean time we will be happy with our $75 gift certificate.

    • Just want to wish all a very happy APW. I think it should be a week where Directors/Managers spend just 5 minutes thinking what it would be like not to have an admin. would they be able to keep up on their appointments, would they get their presentations ready on time, would they have that lunch delivered on time for a lunch meeting. Would the coffee be ready when they arrived in the morning. Most of these things are not necessary and do not fall under everyones job responsibilites, but when you work with a group of people as I do rather than work for them, you do not mind doing little things you do not really have to do, but enjoy doing. Enjoy your day, your week, and everything you do.<br>diane

    • I really enjoy my career as an administrative assistant. I support one director and five managers. My job can be overwhelming at times, but I have to admit, there has not been one time, that I have felt unappreciated. I'm blessed to work with such great individuals.

    • Personally, I do not like to receive flowers or balloons at work. My manager doesn't give his directs gifts like this. I would much rather receive a day off or Admin Training materials. Unfortunately, my managers do not acknowledge this week or day. A few employees would get together to buy me a cake, bring my up in front of everyone, and give a little speech. This is not good either because I dread being in front of an audience. That, and I can't eat sweets. I also don't like diabetic sweets. Or, they would go around and ask people to give money so they can give it to me as a gift. That doesn't go over well, either, because it creates resentment in the office for some employees. They feel put on the spot. It also makes me feel very uncomfortable. In any case, my managers have never been involved or acknowledged this time in any way.

    • My executive thanks me daily. He lets everyone know that he could not do without me and that I really run the office. This is nice to year, not just once a year, but daily.<br><br>One administrative professional day, he gets it. He always give me money and the rest of the day off to go shopping or to the spa. More executives could learn from him. <br><br>I will miss my strategic partner when he decides to retire. I hope that when he does, he will write a book on how to utilize your assistant.

    • My manager and I have an agreement to "not" give gifts to each other; that is our "gift" to each other. I have worked for him for over 10 years and that is a real gift. Our corporation took 2 hours our of one day last week and had an entertaining motivational speaker give a talk while we ate a lunch provided by the company. It was very good. However, it does lack the "personal" touch. In these busy days of "more work done bu less people" it is more and more difficult to remember that we are people first and employees second. Happy, grateful people make happy, grateful employees.<br>

    • There are all great ideas. However I believe the greatest is just being there to listen...We should never stop learning, we then become stagient and bored.

    • This year, my manager gave the gift of "professional development." I will be attending an all-day "Professional Administrative Assistant's Conference" at the Santa Fe Station Hotel on Administrative Professionals Day (Wednesday, April 22nd). I am so excited and confident that I will walk away with some valuable information/tools to ehance my work performance. The conference will consist of various workshops (e.g., People Skills, Business Grammar, 3 Ps of Office Image, Energy Pick Me Ups, Working Well with Others, and Time Wasters) and a keynote speaker (Jan Dacri, leading expert on "Memory Secrets"). What a memorable and rewarding "Administrative Professionals Day" this will be. A continental breakfast, lunch, and snacks will be served.<br><br>WHAT A GIFT!!!<br>

    • I am very lucky to have the executive team that I have. They not only treated me to an IAAP sponsered lunch, but they all signed a great card and gave me knowing that my husband is laid off and we are struggling. The support they show me the rest of year also makes me feel special. We make a great team.
