Music At Work, Should I be listening?

Posted by: Joan Burge on 6/26/2009

Dear Joan,

As I consider you to be the expert in all thing administrative, I thought you could answer a question for me. Is it appropriate to listen to music while at work? I have for many years but I want to project a more professional image.

Warmest regards,

Julie

Hello Julie,

First, thank you for your compliment! This is an interesting question because for most of my career, I would have told you no music in the workplace… period.

Now, here is the answer as of June 26, 2009. If you work in an office where others work close to you, music could be bothersome. It would be polite to ask them how they feel about it. I remember during my admin career at Coppertone in Memphis, TN. We had 3 admins sitting in a row. We had cubicle-like stations but the panels only came up half-way thus we could see each other eye to eye and hear everything that was going on. The admin to the left of me drove me crazy with her music. I’m the type of person who is very focused at work and I don’t like that type of distraction, plus it was a very busy department with people buzzing around all the time.

You should also consider if you get many visitors. It could be distracting to them or they may think it in appropriate. What does your executive think? Do you sit right outside his or her office? If so, is the background music distracting?

The type of music you play makes a difference. Anything with lots of base or thumping would be bothersome. “Easy listening” music is fine. “Spa-like” music can be calming unless it’s waves constantly rushing one after the other.

All my admin career, I worked in places where most often, we did not have music at our desks. That was fine because there was so much commotion all the time. A few offices had music piped in for all employees.

At Office Dynamics, we are a small office with a small group on site. We are all pretty focused at work and don’t have a lot of distractions. We actually keep easy listening music on all day but it is set up in a central location, not at a person’s desk.
Hopefully based on the information I have provided, you will make the best decision for yourself and your work environment. For anything in your business life, I always say…. “If ever in doubt, don’t.”

    • There shouldn't be a problem if the music is played very low. I've recently read studies where allowing employees to listen to music of their choice at their desk actually can raise the morale in an office. This includes listening to their ipod with one headphone plugged in their ear. I would imagine it all depends on the type of work you do while keeping in mind to be respectful to those around you. People work differently. Some need complete silence to focus more. Others can be more productive while listening to music. Just don't cross those boundaries where it interferes with someone else.

    • I love listening to my music at work. I'm not sure what I'd do without that option. I keep it professional and I am considerate.

    • I find that music helps me concentrate on some things better so I either listen to a CD on my computer or my Ipod turned to a low volume- using a set of headphones. It allows me to listen and enjoy what I am doing, without being a distraction to others, and I can always take off the headphones to answer the phone, or speak to someone. I use it as my place to go to for a little while when work is crazy and it allows me to have a little time to "myself" during the day, but still being available to others.

    • Joan, How do you feel about listening to music thru an Ipod at work? My area sometimes get noisy and I like to listen to my Ipod to help tune out the other distracting conversations, etc. so I can focus on work. I only have one ear piece in, but again, I don't know how professional that looks. Thank you, Dana

    • I work in "cubicle world" with walls of varying heights. The woman who sits across the room from me plays her music just loud enough that it is very distracting to me - it doesn't sound like music to me, just noise. I asked her several times to turn it down and was told that she needed it in order to work. My solution was to bring ear plugs to wear so that I am able to work. I think music is fine as long as you use earphones so that there is no chance of disturbing others in the same work space. I think this just goes back to the lack of consideration that is rampant in our world today.

    • Interesting. I worked at a tech company where nearly everyone listened to headsets. At that job, There was a bookkeeper who sat next to me and TALKED TO HERSELF CONSTANTLY! i laugh now, but it was impossible to concentrate. It was so distracting that for the first time in my career I started listening to music to drown her out. This also muffled the noise of sales person who used to walk around the office "pitching". All of this said, I don't think it is unprofessional in order to get your job done. My boss was aware of both situations and I had his approval. We also communicated by inter office chat and so it worked. It was so accepted that we had music sharing capabilities in our office.
