Casual Dress, How to look nice in a casual environment

Posted by: Joan Burge on 6/8/2009

J Newman asks

Joan: I work in an out of the way area in my company where many dress very casually. I'm trying to project a more professional image. You are so put together and well groomed which makes you seem very professional. Do you have any suggestions for me? I enjoy your Webinar series very much.

Yes, I do have some ideas for you.

  1. A person can be casually dressed and look professional, although I will tell you it is a bit harder because the fabrics are different; they are more relaxed and tend to wrinkle easier for casual clothing.
  2. Select nice slacks or trousers that fit your body shape. Make sure you keep them pressed and as neat as you can, even if they are permanent press. Feel the fabric and look at the fabric—does it appear “rustic” or the type of material you would wear on a camping trip?
  3. Instead of wearing open toe shoes, strappy sandals, or flip flops, select a nice
    “loafer-style shoe.”
  4. Nicely manicured nails, hair in place, and at least some light makeup (lipstick and blush).
  5. For your tops, a shirt-like blouse is little more upscale. Stay away from tank tops. If you like pull-over tops, select nicer fabrics (not shear or ones that wrinkle easily) and make sure they aren’t low cut.
  6. Once and awhile you can add a little blazer jacket if you want to “spruce up” your outfit for a particular day.
  7. Capris definitely look more casual than pants that go to your ankles.
  8. Sleeveless attire tends to be less businesslike than a top with short sleeves or long sleeves.
  9. Just think neat, crisp, clean, pressed.

We offer one fabulous book in our shopping cart by image expert, Sherry Maysonave. It is called Casual Power. It is packed with great information, lots of pictures, and is focused on casual dress.
