Executive Assistants- the unknown corporate soldiers by Bill Sweetland

Posted by: Joan Burge on 4/23/2009

This article posted today at AdminAdvisor.com today and we just had to share it with all of you!

By Bill Sweetland

Joan Burge passionately wants to teach the whole business world about an untapped source of energy in the American corporation.

Burge is CEO and founder of Office Dynamics, a consulting firm in Las Vegas that specializes in raising the productivity of teams of executives and their assistants. She wonders why administrative assistants can’t even get rudimentary attention—starting with training—from the companies they work for.

She gets indignant when she ponders the corporate no-man’s land these women inhabit. She says, “Companies do consider administrative assistants important when they miss a day of work, but they are not important when it comes to investing in the assistants’ professional development.” Read complete article at AdminAdvisor.com.

    • I love this article. The one conviction that really stood out for me is the manager who is a lone wolf and is too busy to interact with the assistant or with other people in his area. How can you work around this managerial style to have a better and more effective working-relationship? People feel shut out. They have been interrupted and doors closed on them when speaking. We have identified this manager is most comfortable communicating via email; however, since the person receives so many emails, responses aren't usually received right away or at all. This is not an HR issue; and, the manager is highly valued by upper management.

    • Great article. We admins rock! We can do anything that we set our minds to do and we need to let our managers know this.

    • During these times, training is one of the first budget cuts. I enjoyed reading what you had to say concerning investing in your administrative assistant. It is important to continue to grow and learn. By me being better, I make my executive look better.

    • I printed this article out, made a few positive notes, and shared it with my executive. He has recently had some management coaching, and I noticed the difference. I let him know this as well. I also let him know that I am working on continual improvement for myself, which will help both us. Thanks!
