How To Get Professional Presence- Part 2

Posted by: Joan Burge on 4/20/2009

GUEST BLOG ENTRY BY LISA OLSEN, OFFICE DYNAMICS CERTIFIED TRAINER/SPEAKER

Here’s the next three characteristics of gaining professional presence:

1. Optimism – Assistants with presence display a “can-do” attitude. They are motivated, pro-active and it shows in the way they present themselves. Increase your sense of optimism by remaining persistent in the face of setbacks and failures. Find humor in difficult situations and be willing to laugh at yourself.
2. Passion for work – Set expectations for yourself that you can achieve so you can develop your passion and love what you do. Are you always looking for ways to improve yourself or the situation? When we develop a deeper sense of compassion for ourselves and others, we enhance our presence and others notice. They begin to wonder what you have they don’t have – and they want it!
3. Empathy – Try to understand another person’s perspective. It is critical to attaining what Stephen Covey calls the “win-win” level of relationships. Increase your ability to be empathetic by honing your approachability.
One way to “see” what professional presence looks like is to find and imitate a role model. Watch, look and listen. Identify individuals who possess the characteristic you want to emulate. Work on learning new behaviors. Remember, the key to deep learning is practice. Stretch yourself – make the uncommon common.
Your quest for professional presence will require patience. Commit to one or all of the 6 characteristics and then give yourself time. Although you might not feel as though you’ve changed, your actions may be speaking volumes.
And remember the little hummingbird – slowing down is the key to moving forward, seeing the vision for the future and attaining our professional best.

    • Passion is paramount in today's workplace. You need to work it, believe it, live it and love it. Thanks for the advice.

• Thanks for the great advice. I would add that if you don't have a role model readily available at the office you can look for mentors in professional organizations like IAAP.

    • I believe we were each created with a desire to work and do our best! When have passion for our work, all the better! I have an awesome mentor who is outside my workgroup which keeps my integrity in place and allows for insight into how other areas work! Thank you to my mentor!

    • Truly said, Lisa. I have tried to follow and improve on Covey's 7 Habits for over a year now and as mentioned by you, passion is the key to excel. (I am a hard core optimist by the way - for whatever I am!) Yes, setting expectations for yourself and following a role model have been greatly helpful to me in improving my own learning and growth. Thank you for reinforcing the same values.

    • What a great blog. Passion and empathy are two of the what I feel are the most under rated parts of professional presence. Thanks for a great blog

    • Since I love what I do, having passion is easy! So I will commit to working on the other five.

Today I will not be the hummingbird. I am not letting myself become overwhelmed with everything that I need to accomplish.

    • These characteristics can definitely help everyone in their daily administrative professional lives. The first two characteristics, optimism and passion for work I feel I already possess. The third one, empathy I sometimes need to work on. I consider myself approachable, but I do need to look at the other person's perspective sometimes to help me understand what they want. Thank you for the advice.
