Don’t Forget to Say “Great Job!”

Posted by: Joan Burge on 1/19/2009

Last week when I was in California speaking to administrative assistants at a large corporation, one of them told me how much a compliment from her executive means to her. She said, “When my executive tells me I’m doing a great job, I want to do even more for him.” “I want to go the extra mile; produce quality work; take things off my executive’s plate.”

It may seem like a small thing to you, but it carries a great deal of weight to an assistant. Try to remember to let your administrative or executive assistant know when she or he has done something that is to your liking or meets your expectations. It will go a long way.

    • There is certainly a great deal of truth in your message about how important it is to receivie positive feedback from your manager(s) who you support with dedication everyday.

I accepted a new administrative assistant position after the managers who interviewed me tried very hard to convince me to work with them. They felt I could bring valuable experience and skills to the company.
After four months, I have found that their management style is such that I receive very little positive feedback outside of an occasional thank you now and then.

My approach to any job is to committ to giving my best in quality and efficiency so my manager's job is easier; this job has been no exception. It has become more and more challenging for me to keep my head up and adhere to my personal philosophy when I do not receive some sort of acknowledgment that I have merited positive feedback.

There is alot to be said about hearing "Great Job" because it not only enhances goodwill but also breeds good moral and encourgement.

Thanks for including this topic that I feel is sometimes forgotten and taken for granted among managers who depend on their assistants to help the business run smoothly.
