Assertiveness or Weakness?

Posted by: Joan Burge on 1/9/2009

As I’m preparing to teach one of the modules from my Star Achievement Series® curriculum, I just came across something I want to share with you. This is a good time of year to grasp this concept as you want to start off on the right foot with others.

We teach people by our actions, how we will and will not be treated. And how we think, feel, and behave.

When someone violates our rights and we don’t say anything, we teach them it’s o.k. to dominate and manipulate us.

We, therefore, create stress in our lives. The best time to be assertive with a person is in the early phase of your relationship!

Assertion: Confidently expressing what you think, feel, and believe. Standing up for your rights while respecting others’ rights.

Look for Part 2 of this blog later next week: Can Lack of Assertiveness be Interpreted as Weakness?

    • Dear Joan,
This is very a very important topic. Not only do we teach those who violate our rights, but most of time the violation is not in the strictest of privacy. Therefore, it also shows others that we are weak and easily manipulated. We must stand up for ourselves, but we must do it with tact, dignity and gracefulness. Be firm but not overpowering or show any kind of rudeness. Thanks for Monday Motivators. It is my morning break to stop the insanity of a Monday morning.
Sincerely, Lora
