The following blog is an excerpt from my weekly e-zine Monday MotivatorsTM. It is a timely topic that has been receiving a lot of attention.
Can you really recession-proof your job? No! You can certainly do things to make yourself valuable to your organization which then reduces the chances of losing your job or being moved to a lesser position or another department.
My son-in-law, Jeff, is an outstanding employee. He has fabulous work ethics. He worked in a training department in a tech company here in Vegas for several years. He loved training. This fall his it was announced his department would be closed! Fortunately they gave him two options within the company to choose from.
So, what is the answer? First, you do everything you can to be a contributor at work and add value. Second, you always prepare yourself for the future. Make a decision today that you will do everything in your power to develop yourself in 2009. Security lies within you, not your job. As long as you keep that attitude, you will make it, whatever happens.
Here are some positive steps you can take this week:
- Make yourself more valuable to your organization. Look for ways to contribute.
- Engage in positive actions, speech, and reactions.
- Be a leader and role model.
- Set professional development goals to stay on the cutting edge.
- Rise to any challenges presented to you.
- Pick up the slack, if necessary.
- Maintain a sense of proportion and humor.
- Exercise power over your own life.
- Join professional organizations.
- When you feel overwhelmed, step back, take a deep breath or get away from your desk (briefly). Then come back and re-prioritize.
