Executive Perspective -- Areas You Can Excel

Posted by: Joan Burge on 3/25/2010

I have decided that I will write blogs from time to time and label them the Executive Perspective and then have a sub title. The reason is that I often communicate with managers and executives where they openly tell me what they love about their administrative assistant or what really bugs them about their executive assistant.
So here is the first one. This executive has raved about his executive assistant. Please assess yourself as you read the list.

  • Exceptionally committed to personal excellent performance.
  • Dedicated to my success and that of the organization.
  • Ability to look ahead and anticipate the coming events to ensure my calendar is coordinated and I'm briefed and prepared.
  • Mature insight into human relations, people and personalities.
  • Volunteers insights to me.

    • Many of these suggestions can be achieved by having a strong working relationship with other administrative professionals in your company. By meeting with them, either formally or informally, you can help anticipate upcoming events and deadlines. A strong network also creates visibility for your executive and yourself. It will also hone your people skills because you will be working with different personalities and working styles.

    • I like the idea of your new "Executive Perspective". As an executive assistant is always nice to know what the client is looking for.

    • Hi Joan! I love to hear what managers appreciate about their assistants. As an executive assistant, I sometimes struggle with the fact that the majority of my job is intangible (as are the qualities listed above). At the end of the day I really don't have anything to show for my hard work except the satisfaction of my manager for getting him through the day smoothly. It's great to know when it's recognized and appreciated.

    • Joan, I agree with Karen Kinsley regarding the strong working relationships with other administrative professionals. I have taken it a step further and have outreached to those that work for people my boss needs to connect with. Not only has these earned me some wonderful new friends, but we work together mutually to ensure that we collaborate to the benefit of both our organizations. I have also let these APs know about Office Dynamics and Adminiology as well as IAAP. It constantly amazes me how few people know that these specific and dedicated organizations are there for the asking. It just takes a little effort.

    • The Executive Assistant qualities listed in your blog are what my boss has stated as to why she enjoys working with me. We continue to grow a strong and enjoyable working relationship and partnership.

    • You are right and you never know what little thing you do will have the greatest impact on your executive. I think I earned more respect from my boss by just standing firm on one problem, which impressed him more by showing my personal substance than anything I actually tried to impress him with.
