Do You Have a Business Card?

Posted by: Joan Burge on 3/24/2010

Being that I just finished a World Class Assistant program, I feel compelled to bring up this subject. I mentioned this top-notch group I recently had in a class.

All these attendees were strangers when they walked into the program the first morning. As I was preparing to start the program, I noticed that the executive assistants started handing out their business cards to each other and introducing themselves before we even began. That is pretty savvy.

Do you have a business card? I hope so. I strongly believe administrative professionals of every level should have a card. It says, "I take my career seriously. I am a professional just like any other title in our organization." If your organization will not pay for your cards, you may want to make your own investment. Just make sure that you appropriately use your organization's corporate colors and logos. You may want to get approval first, even though you are paying for them.
One thing I want to share with you that I learned not too long ago has to do with what we do when we get someone's business card. We actually are supposed to look at it when it is handed to us. How many of us get handed a business card and just put it down or throw it in our purse or place it aside. Proper etiquette is to look at the card; treat it special as the person who just handed it to you is special.
I hope this helps.

    • Your advice to look at the card is very important. I know in the Japanese business culture, you keep the business card in front of you during the meeting. I hand out my business cards whenever and wherever possible. You never know when just your card might bring a client to your company.

    • I do not have a business card from my work place. I have made them myself when I have attending a conference. I wish more companies would allow administrative assistance to get them.

    • Business cards for EAs is a useful tool. I hand my card to my executive's visitors. It prompts them to in turn, hand theirs to me for my contact list. Many times they will reach out to me directly, which helps establish the liasion path to my executive.

    • This advice is greatly appreciated. I have always felt that I didn't need business cards simply because I had the negative attitude that "I'm just the secretary". But since I started in my current position 3 years ago as Executive/Board/Corporate Secretary I have learned just how important, even vital, the skills I have are to the organization. Not to mention the respect my boss gives me as I perform my duties. I recently attended a grant writing class and was pleasantly surprised at how impressed others were when I handed them my card as way of introduction.

    • Mentoring a team of admin professionals, I stressed how important it was that each of them have their own business cards, then for Admin Professional Day, I presented them each with a handsome sterling silver business card case so they would always have their business cards with them.
