UPSKILLING vs. Boosting

UPSKILLING vs. Boosting

For years we have heard about boosting our skills. The word for the new decade as identified by the American Society for Training and Development is Upskilling. I love that word.

To me it says that I am skilled and I want to go to the next level with my good skills. I can see where we might say we boost our performance through upskilling.

This is a good word to use when writing your development plan or presenting your case for training or a conference; stating your goal is to upskill. Then list the specific areas you plan to upskill and the specific objectives for each area.

What do you think?

    • I prefer "Upskilling" to the other words normally used, as well. It acknowledges the skills already present in that individual and shows that person is ready to move up. The very least, when this word is put on your Review, it should open up conversations with your manager when you're asked, "What is that?". This is my "in" to shed some light and a little education that training and development is needed for APs the way other positions normally receive regular training sessions.

    • I love it! It will be used in my development plan this week. (Yes, our dept. is a little behind in getting these done this year). The good news is that I starting upskilling on January 11th by taking online classes on Office 2007 applications.

    • What a wonderful word. Hope to eventually see it defined in Webster's or dictionary.com. It definitely exhibits advancement of skills already learned. I will be using it in my development plan as well as the portfolio I will be putting together this year.
