A Hug is Better Than a Fight

Posted by: Joan Burge on 3/10/2009

The next time your child throws a temper tantrum, try giving him or her a hug instead of a lecture. You might be surprised at how effective a hug can be in stopping a child in the midst of a tantrum. But what about the misbehavior? Hugs can diffuse a child’s hurt or anger; making it more conductive for him or her to listen to what you have to say and to be more willing and able to learn. It can lead to a larger discussion during which a child had the opportunity to ask questions. Children do better when they feel better.

    • I'll try that with my granddaughter if she ever throws a temper tantrum.

    • Isn't this the truth.

    • My daughter is 4, and this works for us. When she lets her emotions get away from her, I step in and offer a hug. This calms her down and gives her time to think about how she should have responded to the situation.
