Executive Assistants, Stretch Out of Your Comfort Zone!

Posted by: Joan Burge on 8/25/2009

It is never easy to do something that you have never done or only done a few times. My great assistant, Jasmine Freeman, has experienced a big stretch this past week and I am proud of her.

Due to popular demand, Jasmine is coming out from behind the desk so admins everywhere can get to know her. This week, Jasmine was professionally videotaped. She put in about 6 grueling hours of taping to produce 5 short videos that you will get to see very soon.

Jasmine has always stepped out and has never backed away from new opportunities presented to her. But this was a big task I presented to her and I only gave her 1 week's notice. Even someone like me who has 19 years' experience as a professional speaker knows it can take 4 - 7 takes to get a videotaped just the way you want it to be. This gets pretty exhausting after saying the same message over and over and delivering new messages.

The good news of all of this is that Jasmine is developing her self-presentation skills. She just started Toastmasters not too long ago so I told her this was a great experience in:
* learning to put your thoughts together in a way that flows and makes sense
* maintaining composure when feeling a little nervous
* having to focus and "be in a zone" after a hectic morning at the office

I know this new stretch will benefit Jasmine in her future. So next time your executive presents you with a challenge, new task, or opportunity, say "Yes. I will give it a try!"

Hello! This is Jasmine. I just wanted to add a little note to Joan's message here. It was a great time video taping last week and I really got to learn a lot through the process. I am glad this opportunity was given to me and I thank all of you for that as well.

You never know when these newly acquired skills might come in handy. In fact, last Thursday after my last day of taping, I had a networking event. At this big networking event I was pulled aside by a council member to be on camera doing a brief interview with a local Vegas channel. Had I not just spent part of my day in front of a camera I probably would have shyed away from this chance or tried it with little confidence - I'm happy to say I jumped right in and really enjoyed the experience. I can't wait to share my introduction videos with you next week.

Thanks again,

Jasmine Freeman

    • Joan, I work for a non-profit organization. The position I am in, I have created myself. I am the first to hold this position with the Executive Director/CEO. This is good and bad. Good because I get to make it what I want. Bad because I don't have any resources, or mentors to bounce ideas off, etc. My boss is incredible. He is open to ideas and suggestions. We are a great team but I feel there is so much more for me to offer to the position, to my boss, and the organization. I was a legal secretary for 10 years, which I went to school for. I removed myself from the "professional" world to spend more time with my family. I am excited to be back in the Administrative Assistant role working only part-time, until the position grows. What webinars can you recommend to me and what letter writing book would you suggest? Thank you for your guidance. Annette Steele

    • Thanks Joan for bringing up such an important topic. After working for 20 years in an admin role, I have found various senior admins who are just comfortable in their zone that they do not want to explore anything beyond their current role. I recently left the Corporate sector to be involved in development and am really feeling glad that I took the risk and uncertainty in the right spirit. I fully agree with Jasmine when she says that you never know when the new skills come in handy especially when our admin roles are evolving so fast in today's scenario. I am sure many admins understand and value this new knowledge. Thanks again. You're great !

    • Hello Annette! Congratulations on your position. While it can be a little intimidating at first, this position will give you great opportunity to grow. One book I recommend is called Handbook of Business Letters; try to get the most recent edition. Mentors are important. I always had mentors during my admin career. Hopefully you can find someone through a professional organization or by building new networks within the community because of your position. The fact that you have a great executive is a real plus. If you have not viewed the 2nd half of my free webinars, called 26 Weeks to Administrative Excellence, you really need to do so. Unfortunately, I can't think of any great webinars for the caliber you need. I would encourage you to attend a high-end workshop where you can get live practice and coaching. If you can ever fit our World Class Assistant program in your budget and can come out here, it would be fabulous as the groups are small and I provide all the coaching and teaching. Aside from that, maybe search out executive assistant networks via the social networking channels. Best of luck!

    • Dear Nancy, To be perfectly honest in a humble way, my workshops for executive assistants are tops. First because I worked in the profession for 20 years and now I've been on the other side teaching and coaching assistants for 19 years plus my training methods are highly effective. With all that said, you may not be able to travel to us. AMA has a few workshops for admins; then their is the typical Skillpath or CareerTrack. But those are all pretty typical and don't go deep. You might see what the local colleges offer. Maybe our readers will have some suggestions beyond what we offer.
